Sorry: of course I was refering to Q4 2009 when Tom (and Ken) started propagating the "need for banking bonuses". That didn't make sense to me. It still doesn't. Anyway, Bloomberg Radio should bring the podcasts back. I really don't understand why they are crippling one of their top-horses. Besides, FREMIUM works!

A few months back Tom Keene had a guest on talking about freemium and he recommended that producers give away 80% of their product / service / etc and charge for the premium content. Indeed, Bloomberg cripples their podcasts. "On the Economy" was butchered from 30 minute podcasts to 3 minutes. That's only offering 10%. At this point, it becomes a headline stream instead of a podcast.

I used to listen to these podcasts. I'ld listen to any single one of them (very often from the beginning to the end). The other day Tom Keene had a guest on talking about fremium and all that. Well, what happened to this fremium? If the fremium concept applies to any publisher, it must be Bloomberg!! It's such a waste to block out so many listeners. Not only are BB blocking them out from some interesting discussion with Nobel laureates and all that. But also are they blocking them out from one of the best radio programs (and radio makers) there are. Such a waste. And such a destruction of fremium value. Although it must be said that (for some unknown reason) Tom Keene started to propagate "the need for 2010 banking bonuses on Wall St" during 4Q2010, according to him "because someone has to keep the economy going" or "the kids' tuition money needs to be paid". Yeah, TK railing against banking bonuses curbs didn't really make sense, and therefore must have gone against the guys character. I really felt he was selling out there - which was a real pity b/c he is a fine radio maker. One of the best imho. Now Folks, you're not gonna believe this, but Bloomberg charging for this podcast definitely is a bad idea!

Yes, they are a bit vocal, aren't they? Different mediums need different advertising models. It will be interesting to see what happens with the new Apple tablet that is supposed to be released. It could save the magazines... old folks like my dad don't read news online, but he did seem interested in a Kindle-type device. And of course, like I mentioned in the article, audio podcasts will be ready to play on a tablet device from apple... maybe they will integrate a subscription podcast model as part of new device.

Wise words Ken, I completely agree. It is interesting to observe that the group making the loudest protests agains paid-for content are the advertising agencies and media research firms. Could they have a vested interest perhaps - As Hamlet's Queen said - "Methinks the lady doth protest too much" :-)
